Kia ora everybody,
Earlier this week on Monday a group for kaupeka were lucky enough to go to Travis wetlands. Here is what Travis wetlands looks like:
In this blog post I will take you through everything I learned when I was there. When we got off the bus we headed to the front of Travis wetlands and saw Tracy waiting for us, her name was Tracy and there was also a man called Chris.
The first thing we did was get an introduction from Tracy about her and what’s so important about Travis wetlands. Then we headed over to the information center. First thing we did was look out the window (which led onto the lake) and tried to look and see what we could find, I saw some ducks and birds but nothing to special, we sat down and she asked what we saw. Once that was done she pulled out a bag, it had different items that represent the wetlands, she picked students to come up and pull an item out of the bag, I got to go up and pull out an item, I pulled out breakfast in bed, that relates to the wetlands because its like the animals food that they get. Then she taught us about how old the wetlands is and why we need to protect it, something I learned was that there is so much more urban land areas then wetlands now compared to 1999.
Once we were done there Chris took all the year 7’s to the lake where he gave us all binoculars to look at the birds and other animals in the lake, we saw lots of different animals but one the stood out to most group the most was a black duck,he gave us a challenge that we had to figure out its eye color, we had to zoom in nice and close to try and see what it was, some Friends and I thought it was red, but then we looked closer and it turned out to be white!.
Once we were once there we went over to the bird watching center where we saw lots and lots of birds and ducks. One thing I saw that was pretty cool was a bunch of ducks all sitting on one branch, wow that must have been tight! Once we had spotted all the animals we headed over to a small muddy lake where we saw lots of black and white birds, there two kinds of them so we had to spot which were which, either there were just one kind of them or both, in the end there ended up being both kinds. Once we were all done we headed back to the place where we started and had some yummy morning tea. Well we were eating pukekos kept coming up to us and were trying to get some of our food, we all started backing up because we did not want to give them our food, so one of them came onto our tarpaulin and pooped on it! We were all a bit shocked but it was pretty funny.
Then Tracy took us over to the river to a pretty fun activity, we had to go through the lake with a strainer on a stick to try and catch any bugs, I did it with my friends Miriam and Juliana. At first we only found sea snails, which look like small black dots. After a while we found some back swimmers, they look like this:
We put them all onto a tray, that had different parts on it so we could separate them. We all showed off what we got to the rest of the year 7’s.
Then we headed back to where we started and all stood in a circle, to put some animals into the food web by holding up photos and putting them in order. Once we were done we said our thank yous and headed back to school.
Thanks for reading, have you ever been to the wetlands.
